Auroville was conceived as an universal town by Mirra Alfassa, a spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo at Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry. It was thought to be as a place where people can stay from all over the world from different religion and ethnicity. The site of Auroville north of Pondicherry was a barren land covering an area of about 20 sq Km. This land has been transformed into greenery, beautiful experimental buildings and a oasis of peace and tranquility.
Auroville is located about 13 Kms from Pondicherry main bus stand and Pondicherry railway station. Buses run from the Pondicherry bus stand to the Auroville Visitors Centre at 7:30 am, 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm. Buses return to Pondy at 8:15 am, 2:15 pm and 5:15 pm. Alternatively you can take an Auto or call shared Taxi Service (STS) [ Ссылка ] for an Auroville Taxi. Auroville have huge parking area. For two wheelers Rs 20 and for 4 wheelers Rs 100.
For the parking area we started walking for Matrimandir, the golden dome. It was also conceived by Mirra Alfassa, lovingly called the mother. On way we say Sri Aurobindo auditorium where some exhibition or crafts are always on display. You can buy some cloths, photos or crafts as a souvenir. We were changed an entry fee of Rs 100 per person. Also, near the auditorium we had lime soda and I suggest you should try it out. The city has many amenities like Samasti, Swayam - a mixed use residential communinity, Aurelec Prayogshala - a business center, Quiet Healing Center - Alternative Health Care Facility, Library, Townhall, Solar kitchen complex, Schools, Unity Pavilion, Pavilion of Tibetan Culture.
To really feel and enjoy the peace and tranquility of Auroville I suggest you come and stay here from few days. For that many guest houses are available like Gaia's garden guest house, centre guest house, Afsanah guest house etc. Also, you would find guest houses outside the area of Auroville.
Before the 1980s Sri Aurobindo society used to own all the assets of Auroville. However, after the death of Mirra Alfassa in 1973, huge fissures developed between the residents and management of Auroville. The residents appealed to then prime minister of India Indira Gandhi to intervene. The society challenged it in the supreme court. However, court upheld the constitutional validity of the intervention. Later during PM Rajiv Gandhi's time for a lasting arrangement, Auroville Foundation act was passed in Indian parliament in 1988 where all assets of Auroville has moved to Auroville Foundation and a three tier governing body was formed.
After a walk of about 20 - 25 minutes, including the time spent at Aurobindo auditorium, we reached Matrimandir. It is a beautiful sight to see. They are still working to revamp the area around Matrimandir to make it more beautiful. If you would like to visit the inner chamber of Matrimandir you will have to do a booking atleast 3 - 7 days before. Only children aged 10 years or above are allowed inside. On rainy days Matrimandir is closed and all booking to inner chamber are cancelled.
