Ella Rock is located in Ella, a town high in the mountainous region of Sri Lanka. Standing at an elevation of 1,041 metres above sea level, Ella Town is located right in the centre of the island, and you can start the Ella Rock hike directly from the main high street.

During the hike, if you get stuck along the way there are always other tourists on the same trail and many locals that are very friendly and more than willing to help.

The best time to visit the west and south coasts, and hill country of Sri Lanka, is from December – March. Many people choose to start the Ella Rock hike early in the morning, and we certainly recommend it.  Mainly for the reason that, although Ella is a lot cooler than the rest of Sri Lanka, it can still get pretty hot on the way up.

Also, if you leave too late in the day, the clouds will rise up quite high throughout the morning and it can obstruct the amazing view from top. So when planning your Ella Rock hike, the earlier the better and don’t forget some energy snacks and water.

Remember that when walking along the train tracks that this is a working railway so lookout for trains.

At the top of Ella Rock you are rewarded with the most breathtaking, panoramic views. Sitting above the clouds, you can look out across the surrounding lush green hills and countryside.

Finally, allow yourself time at the top to enjoy and soak up the incredible views. Now just catch your breath, sit back and enjoy the spectacular views!
