(22 Dec 2014) Some two million live carps are sold in the streets of the Czech Republic every year just before Christmas, a tradition that makes the fresh water fish the most popular holiday meal for 88 percent of families, according to a recent survey.
At the customer's request the carps are either killed by the vendor or taken home and kept in a bathtub for several days before they are served on Christmas Eve in fish soup or fried in bread crumbs.
Fish seller Miroslav Blecha said no other fish is on sale during the Christmas period in the Czech markets.
Animal rights activists hold regular protests against this tradition every year.
