Hey everyone!
Welcome back to my YouTube channel. In this video, you’ll get to see a video of my celebrations for Pancha Ganapati. Not all of you may know this, but I am Hindu, as well as half Sri Lankan. In this video, I want to share a bit about my culture and religious beliefs. My culture and religion are very important to me and are a great part of who I am as a person. I hope that you enjoy this YouTube short and if you do, please like and subscribe.
Pancha Ganapati is a 5 day Hindu festival, which is celebrated from the 21st - 25th December. The festival was created by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami in 1985 so that Hindu families can participate in the holiday season without compromising their Hindu values. During this festival, you pray to Pillayar, who is also known as Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. His blessings of joy and harmony are brought into the five realms of your life, a wider circle each day: family, friends, associates, culture and religion.
Each day of Pancha Ganapati, you offer Pillayar food of that day’s colour. The food can be contained in a wrapper of that day’s colour, such as on day 3 (red), where offerings of red-wrapped chocolates were given to Pillayar. As well as offering food to Pillayar, a Pillayar Pooja is conducted. I did not record any of the poojas that I did, as I wanted to focus on my prayers, rather than filming what I was doing, however, during the pooja, many things take place, such as chanting the 108 names of Pillayar, circling the lamp in front of Pillayar and the ringing of the bell, just to name a few.
The 5 days of Pancha Ganapati each have a different colour associated to them. As well as offering this coloured food to Pillayar, you also wear this coloured clothing throughout the day. Each day, I would wear a different punjabi (a type of Indian dress worn with leggings and a scarf) appropriate to the colour of the day.
This is the order of the colours worn throughout the festival:
21st December - YELLOW💛 (family)
22nd December - BLUE💙 (friends)
23rd December - RED❤️ (associates)
24th December - GREEN💚 (culture)
25th December - ORANGE🧡 (religion)
Similar to Christmas, we exchange gifts with family and friends, but instead we say “Happy Pancha Ganapati” instead of “Merry Christmas”.
Thank you for watching today’s YouTube Short, and I hope that you’ve learnt something new.
Happy Pancha Ganapati! 🥳✨
