South Russian tarantula is among the biggest spider species in Europe. It hides in a ground burrow most of the year and it only comes out at night to hunt. During September and October the males leave their shelter looking for much bigger females to mate with. Next spring the fertilized spider ladies seal their burrows, spin a large cocoon with eggs and guard it carefully. As soon as the little spiders hatch, they crawl onto the mother’s abdomen and safely spend the next few days there. And the most important information – the mothers crawl out of the burrows in sunny days to bask in the sun with their babies. This is what I always read in the books. Since I have been fascinated by large wolf spiders for a long time, the plan was quite obvious. One day I have to see and film this.
After a lucky founding of the right place I started returning to the spider home regularly. After I month I managed to find first burrows that were sealed with silk and where I could see a massive white cocoons. It’s clear, it’s here, I cannot miss this. Although the place is quite a way from my home, I checked it seven more times since then, until finally I came to see first spider children. It was on June 1st which is the Children‘s Day. My favourite female tarantula was basking in the sun at the entrace to her burrow, her back full of little babies. There was a lof of joy, rejoicing and singing that day!
