Dr. Steven: My name is Steve Barna, and I am an interventional spine physician, and I practice at the Florida Orthopedic Institute. I would say more than 90 percent of what I see is spine-related pain anywhere from neck to low back pain. I feel that my main focus is the nonsurgical conservative approach, and that goes anyway from being a quarterback to finding the right combination of things including physical therapy, right diagnostic workup, all the way to doing minimally-invasive procedures that are expertly-guided spinal procedures. I knew I wanted to be a doctor since I was a little kid. My pediatrician was my hero. What’s nice about this particular specialty is it’s always changing. There’s always new modalities coming out, new ways to diagnose, to treat. I’ve really had an interest in international work, and even in international travel and learning about other cultures. Most recently I was invited to go to (01:00) Kuwait as a visiting doctors program as well to basically do all the things I do here in the US because they’re not readily available in Kuwait, which is also a fascinating experience. My wife and I are avid tennis players, so we play a ton of tennis. I spend a lot of time with the family. I think the most satisfying thing about what I do is restoring people’s function. Whatever it is that someone wanted to do, which of course means they have less pain as well, but they’re actually having a meaningful quality of life that’s highly satisfying.
