Downtown Aiken, in particular, the well-known and visually pleasing South boundary corridor, including the surrounding neighborhoods, was not always covered in mature stately trees; it was open farmland. A variety of Oaks, pines, magnolias, and cedars were planted in the early 1900s with the arrival of the Winter Colony. They built lovely homes, and then, of course, power lines along the roadways appeared. in a nutshell, years later, once the urban trees matured, they began to suffer the stresses of residential development.
