Lawyers have wrapped up their arguments in a Federal Court case challenging a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruling that ordered Ottawa to pay billions in compensation to First Nations children and their families. Justice Department lawyer Robert Frater said Tuesday Canada agrees its actions were discriminatory and that the government will compensate the children and their families - just not through the tribunal’s ruling. First Nations individuals and advocates say government must stop fighting Indigenous children in court and must compensate families for its injustices. (November 26, 2019.)
