President (Jacob) Zuma thanks the South African public and the world for their ongoing support and understanding. We must support him and support his family, says President Zuma. We must demonstrate our love and appreciation of his leadership during the struggle for liberation, and in our first few years of freedom and democracy, by living out his legacy of promoting unity, non-racialism, non-sexism, and prosperity in our country."

STORYLINE:
Relatives of Nelson Mandela continued to visit him in a Pretoria hospital on Wednesday.
They included Mandela's former wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
She has been a regular visitor since the 94-year-old was admitted to hospital on June 8 with what the government has said is a lung infection.
President Jacob Zuma has said that Mandela's condition - previously described as serious but stable - deteriorated to critical over the weekend.
On Wednesday, Zuma's spokesman said there had been no change and that the former South African president remains in a critical condition.
Outside Mandela's residence in Johannesburg, meanwhile, well-wishers from around the world continued to pay their respects to the anti-apartheid leader.
Mandela spent 27 years in prison during white racist rule and became South Africa's first black president in all-race elections in 1994, playing an indispensable role in steering the country through a tense transition that many feared would deteriorate into widespread bloodshed.
After his presidency, he focused his work on charitable causes, but withdrew from public life years ago and became increasingly frail in recent years.
He last made a public appearance in 2010 at the World Cup soccer tournament, which was hosted by South Africa.
