Homo Ludens by Huizinga is entirely about the role of play in #culture and society, yet it offers no definition of #play at all.

It instead offers characteristics of play. These include:

Freedom. Play is a free activity, external motives are put aside.
Separateness. It occurs within its own boundaries of time and space.
Uncertainty. Outcome of play is uncertain and may incorporate an element of chance.
Order. Play unfolds under specific rules that are different from ordinary life.
No Material Interest. There are no material interests involved in play and no profit can be gained from it.
