The rabbit stick is more powerful than it looks. It's power comes from how fast it spins through the air, not how quickly it gets to the target. Once I realized that, I started to get a lot better at throwing them. I'm always surprised at how far they can fly when carved correctly. In my region, Juniper is a good choice and was used historically by the local indigenous tribes. Its not a very dense wood, but dense enough, and rocky mountain juniper and utah juniper have a tendency to grow J or C shaped branches, so its pretty easy to find the right shape for rabbit sticks.
