This video is a teaser for a longer video with more information about the systematic and unnecessary over cutting of trees in Hammersmith, a district of London, England.
I think it’s safe to say that the attitude of the council regarding the cutting of trees, especially the ones in conservation areas, is cavalier at best.
I am still working on the full video. It will show trees which were more damaged than the ones in the teaser.
Severe pruning such as the ones at Sinclair Road shown in this video have reduced the number of branches considerably.
And much less branches mean much less leaves which mean much less production of oxygen and much less removal of harmful gases such as carbon dioxide.
“It is proposed that one large tree can provide a day’s supply of oxygen for up to four people.”

Multiply that by hundreds of trees being over cut every year in the borough of Hammersmith & Fulham and the result, besides less production of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide, will be the reduction of shelter and food for wild life (singing birds and wood pigeons, for example). It will also reduce the space for bird's nesting.
Moreover, “Plants are often seen as the “lungs” of an ecosystem because they absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen… But they also act as an ecosystems “liver” too, filtering atmospheric pollutants like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide through their leaves.
Trees are particularly effective at removing particulate matter (PM)…PM comes in the form of tiny particles of organic chemicals, acids, metals and dust, emitted from fossil-fuel-burning vehicles and factories, as well as construction sites…
Fine particulate matter can easily penetrate into human respiratory system, causing lung and cardiovascular diseases or exacerbating respiratory illness. It has also been linked to inflammation and heart disease.
By one estimate, 8.9 million deaths a year globally could be attributable to exposure to outdoor fine particulate matter.”

Most of London’s trees are in private spaces, not parks as many people would think. Hence the importance of protecting the trees in back gardens of residences.
“We have 3.8 million gardens in London that cover a quarter of the city. Too many of them are increasingly grey, poisoned, plastic and devoid of life. But things don’t have to be like this.”

There is an old saying among professional arborists in connection with tree pruning, “If in doubt, don’t prune.”
Things are different in the borough of Hammersmith & Fulham: Prune as you please no matter what or, as a chainsaw operator told me when I complained that he was cutting more than allowed by the planning application: " I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT".
P.S. The music in the video is Pfitzner’s Funeral March
