Professor Phil Berman is working on creating an HIV vaccine. In the past few years scientists have had three breakthroughs, the RV 144 trial in Thailand, which proved HIV vaccination was possible; mapping the 3D structure of the HIV envelope protein, which protects the virus; and the discovery of the 'elite neutralizers' who can create extremely effective antibodies, all of which are being used to develop a cost-effective HIV vaccine.
