The delivery of a baby, also known as childbirth or labor, is the process through which a baby is born from the mother's womb. It typically involves several stages:
Early Labor: This stage involves the onset of contractions that may be irregular and mild. The cervix begins to efface (thin out) and dilate (open).
Active Labor: Contractions become stronger, longer, and more frequent. The cervix continues to dilate, typically reaching about 6-8 centimeters by the end of this stage.
Transition: This is the most intense phase of labor. Contractions are very strong and close together, and the cervix dilates from around 8 to 10 centimeters. Many women experience a range of emotions during this stage.
Pushing and Delivery: Once the cervix is fully dilated, the mother starts pushing during contractions to help move the baby through the birth canal. With each contraction and push, the baby moves closer to being born. Eventually, the baby's head emerges first (crowning), followed by the rest of the body.
Delivery of the Placenta: After the baby is born, the placenta, which provided nutrients and oxygen to the baby during pregnancy, is delivered. This usually happens within a few minutes to half an hour after the baby is born.
