In this twenty-fourth installment of our quarterly series, Philosophers in the Midst of History, I discuss the life, thought, and influence of the ancient philosopher, tragedian, and advisor to Nero, Lucius Annaeus Seneca the Younger. We look at his historical situation in the culture of the Roman Empire ruled by the Julio-Claudian dynasty, in a time when education, philosophy, and culture are spread throughout the Roman world, and specifically at some of the key ideas that Seneca holds and writes about as a practitioner of Stoic philosophy.
