In the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race, Torben Grael and Ericsson 4 emerged victorious after 37,000 miles of intense competition. The race began in Alicante, Spain, and concluded in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This edition marked Grael's second attempt and final appearance in the race, as well as the introduction of dedicated Media Crew Members on each boat.
The event also saw the debut of future winner Ian Walker as skipper of Green Dragon and Ken Read's first campaign as skipper of PUMA Ocean Racing. A notable highlight was 60-year-old veteran Magnus Olsson leading Ericsson 3 to a surprising victory in the 40-day Leg 5 from Qingdao to Rio.
