In my previous video, we looked at dark cocoa chocolate, which is the best type of chocolate to choose when on a weight-loss diet, due to its health benefits and ability to curb appetite. You can find a link to that video below. Now that we know what chocolate to choose, how much should you be eating when losing weight?
Dark chocolate, like regular milk chocolate, is also high in sugar and fat and therefore contains a high amount of calories. This sadly means that you have to watch your portion sizes when eating any chocolate, irrespective of the health benefits. If you consume too much chocolate, the extra calories will add up and prevent you losing weight or worse, make you put weight back on.
So how much can you get away with eating?
Well it depends on you and your current diet. If you eat 5 bars a day and cut down to 2 bars a day, you should be able to lose weight because you are reducing the calories you consume. Unfortunately, eating two chocolate bars a day is still unhealthy and probably not a great idea. So let’s look at the best case scenario.
The ideal amount of dark chocolate is about one portion size. Depending on the chocolate and brand, this can be anywhere from 2-6 squares. The ideal amount is about 20-30g. This is typically about one fifth of a bar of dark chocolate. Sometimes some chocolates also indicate how much a serving size should be.
The amount of chocolate you consume should just be enough to satisfy your daily cravings while preventing you from craving more and getting those impulses to binge.
If you are able to go a day without eating chocolate here and there, instead of having some every single day, that is a lot better too and will help you to get out of the habit of craving and eating chocolate all the time. This will reduce the calories you consume from chocolate and help you reach your weight-loss goals faster.
Like with most things, chocolate is best consumed in moderation. A couple of squares every once in a while is not going to hurt you, so once you have your cravings under control, feel free to grab some chocolate and indulge guilt free.
