The fifth episode of Marvel Studios' new Disney plus series, Agatha All Along, is filled with a lot of plot and intrigue despite its brief length. A frequent criticism of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series (as well as Star Wars) is that the episodes often don’t feel like standalone stories, which is a key aspect of good television. While "Darkest Hour, Wake Thy Power" somewhat falls into this pattern, it remains an essential part of the larger narrative. In particular, the death of Alice Wu-Gulliver is both heartbreaking and clever, especially when considering what she endured on the Witches Road.
From the very start, the coven has been suspicious of Agatha Harkness. Her most notorious trait is her ability to forcefully siphon the powers of other witches, often resulting in their deaths. Although there are times when Agatha shows a more human side, the audience is always reminded that she is essentially a villain. "Darkest Hour, Wake Thy Power" ties back to Agatha's backstory revealed in WandaVision, but it also hints that her confident, detached, and menacing demeanor is a way to protect herself from being betrayed. The episode feels somewhat scattered, partly due to its short length and a surprising twist at the end. Nevertheless, it contributes to the broader storyline, focusing on the theme of motherhood.
In Agatha All Along, the concept of a witches' coven being a sisterhood is frequently highlighted. For instance, the series' "heroes" manage to evade the Salem Seven by utilizing "hexenbesen," a German term for "witches' broom." The process of creating one requires two witches to collaborate for their mutual advantage. However, in WandaVision, Episode 8, titled "Previously On," Agatha faces an attempted execution led by her own mother. The ghost of Evanora Harkness reappears during the trial, bringing with her tragic consequences.
