Fighter Jets Hit PKK Targets
Turkish fighter jets have hit targets belonging to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party in Hakurk in northern Iraq. Turkey reported that PKK militants had killed two soldiers and wounded four on Sunday. Meanwhile, Turkey has asked NATO to hold an extraordinary meeting to discuss its border security. The meeting is set to take place on Tuesday. NATO says Turkey requested because of ‘the heinous terrorist attacks in recent days, and also to inform Allies of the measures it is taking.’
Fighting Despite Ceasefire
Fighting in Yemen has reportedly continued despite a five-day humanitarian pause. The ceasefire had been announced by the Saudi-led coalition. An explosion in Zinjibar in Abyan province killed at least 10 Houthis right before the truce was due to take effect. The Houthis say they have not agreed to stop fighting and that the UN had not formally notified them. Shortly after the truce began, Houthis reportedly began shelling in the city of Taiz. Two-previous ceasefires have also failed to hold.
Obama Arrives in Ethiopia
US President Barack Obama arrived in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa on Sunday. This is the first time a US president has visited the country while in office. He met Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn upon arrival. They plan to discuss security co-operation and trade.
Fiat Buy-back
Fiat-Chrysler plans to buy-back 300 thousand of its Ram pickup trucks.The Ram is the company’s top-selling vehicle. But the US’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says some of the trucks have steering problems. The buy-back is part of a deal with US safety regulators to settle legal issues related to 23 recalls of the truck since 2011. This is the biggest buy-back of its kind in US history. Full details of the deal have yet to be released. But it is set to be part of a larger settlement that includes a 105 million dollar fine.
