Protecting succulents from getting sunburnt by direct sun during summer is super easy and can be done using simple household items or, simply, by providing shade.
Temperature records are currently being broken in the Northern hemisphere and the return of El Nino will cause heatwaves around the world with potentially deadly temperatures.
Despite evolving in hot and dry environments, many succulents can burn when exposed to direct sun and it's UV once it starts hitting around 35C/95F. Over 40C/104F smaller, less established or severely stressed succulents can even die before they have a chance to suffer sunburn first.
For some succulents, all it takes is half an hour of direct sun of over 40C/104F and they can be done for.
But preventing that from happening is easy. There are several options available to protect your succulents. Smaller pots can be moved into a bright shade for the duration of the heatwave while large, heavy pots or garden succulents can have shadecloth, old sheets, umbrellas or gazebos pitched over them to prevent the UV burning their leaves. This can also be applied to protect other plants from sunburn, not just succulents.
