Gabrielle Feuersinger, owner of San Francisco's Cake Coquette, demonstrates the art of the frosting rose. The only special equipment you'll need is a pastry bag, a rose tip, and a pastry nail (which looks like a small pedestal). It may take a little practice to perfect your rose, but playing with frosting is fun.

I'm a big fan of decorating cakes and cupcakes with buttercream icing and I'm going to show you how to make a buttercream rose. To do this you need a pastry nail, a rose tip, and a piping bag. So you're going to start with a little base. The more experienced you get the higher base you can have. It allows you to make a bigger rose. You start with the center. You make a tight swirl. You're moving the nail and the tip at the same time. So like a real rose, you make small petals around your center. The petals can get bigger and bigger as the flower gets bigger. To transfer your buttercream rose, you use scissors slightly open to slide underneath the rose, lift up and move to your cake or cupcake.
