STORYLINE:
Residents of Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania looked towards a demolition crew on Thursday to help bring some closure to a painful chapter for their peaceful community.
Workers with bulldozers and heavy machinery moved in before dawn to demolish the one-room Amish schoolhouse where a gunman fatally shot five girls and wounded five others.
In just about 15 minutes, the schoolhouse - which had become a tragic reminder of last week's horrific event - was reduced to little more than rubble.
A group of some 30 people, many of them in traditional Amish dress, gathered nearby to watch as the schoolhouse was levelled.
By morning the debris was gone leaving just a bare patch of earth.
The Amish say they plan to leave empty land where the schoolhouse once stood.
The destruction of the West Nickel Mines Amish School came a week after the solemn funerals of the five girls killed by gunman Charles Carl Roberts IV.
Roberts held the 10 girls hostage for about an hour before shooting them and killing himself as police closed in.
The five girls wounded in the October 2 shooting are still believed to be hospitalised. The hospitals are no longer providing any information about the patients, at the request of their families.
The school had been boarded up since the killings ten days earlier.
Mike Hart, a spokesperson for the Bart Township Fire Department, said local residents were hoping the demolition would bring about some closure.
Pennsylvania resident Laurie Chambers said it is good that the building is no longer there.
