This address seeks to answer the question of whether or not the economic crisis and the migration crisis have compromised the cultural and attitudinal basis of immigrants' inclusion in Italy. The final remarks will stress the need to govern, with appropriate and forward-looking policies, the issue of migration and the broader theme of citizenship in connection with the trends of public opinion and the "use" of the immigration issue in contemporary politics in Italy and the U.S.
Crosscurrent Pictures hosted a conference entitled "Stories Untold: African Migrants in Italy and Our Role in the "Migration Crisis". The event was held in the Communication Department Studio in Garey Hall and focused on the experience of African migrants in Italy and the perspectives of Italians on the issues. They hope to shed light on aspects of the current "migration crisis" that are not covered in the media. Speakers and attendees engaged in dialogue about how Italy, the EU, and the U.S. have responded to the influx of migrants and identify what we can do to help the situation. This conference was co-sponsored by Africana Studies, Peace & Justice Studies, Global Interdisciplinary Studies, Center for Multicultural Affairs, Arab & Islamic Studies, Department of Romance Languages, Sociology, History, and Political Science.
