Bowser

Being the main villain of the Mario franchise, Bowser has quite the legacy to his name. He’s toppled kingdoms, destroyed his own evil counterparts, and has certainly earned his place as the ruler of Koopa Keep. While he is far from the brightest bulb in the box, Bowser has shown his strengths greatly outweigh his weaknesses. Sure he is illiterate, but the guy has been going hand to hand with Mario for nearly half a century and counting! From spin offs to mainline games to even the big screen, Bowser is a consistent force to be reckoned with. Surviving supernovas and the proceeding black hole, lava on so many occasions, even to the point he has been seen walking around as a skull and bones. With all this history though comes plenty of baggage, from games that are less savory to many games Bowser just isn’t a part of, Mario has had many enemies over the years and in early times Bowser actually wouldn’t show up for games like Mario Land or the American sequel to Mario 1. While he is obviously presently the number one baddie to the portly plumber he has been thrown to the wayside before. Compile this with his lack of brains, lack of tact, knack for kidnapping, lying, cheating, and many other crimes committed by this Koopa King and you get quite the varied ideals of how important Bowser truly is in the Mario universe itself. At this point you have to take into account Bowsers lesser and higher moments. Sure he’s been a complete joke before but has that ever stopped him from being threatening? Has being absent from some games here and there really hurt his longevity? No, because a villain like Bowser, one so simple yet dynamic and powerful is timeless. Bowser was obviously an integral part of gaming history being one of if not THE most endearing and popular villain in the medium! No matter his failures we still love to see this tyrannical turtler come out of his shell to give Mario and crew yet another daunting challenge to overcome. To a point, without Bowser there is no Mario.

Pete

Our other character here is quite the historical marvel himself. One of the first cartoon characters to ever be created for Disney, Pete is a walking monument to the archetype that his character provides: being a big bad brute for our plucky little hero to best. His earliest days actually saw him in a starring role with a live action co-star named Alice. Weirdly enough at the time Pete was a bear instead of being a cat as he would later on. And yes while he looks similar to a dog and even Goofy the Dog himself, Pete is a cat. The cat that is lucky enough to be paired with the world’s most iconic mouse: Mickey! After Pete had gone toe to toe with Walt’s original creation Oswald the Rabbit, Pete became the first big time nemesis for the at the time newly created rodent as they has many scuffles over the years one of the most infamous being Steamboat Willie, which also carried one of if not the first depiction of Pete as a cat. As previously stated Pete was somewhat of a trendsetter for the big bully archetype and quite frankly animation as a whole given his appearances in some of the earliest cartoons we have around to this day and the fact he appeared alongside real people long before it became a big budget movie deal. Though over the years Pete has occasionally become somewhat of an after thought, Disney will every so often bring in a different villain for Mickey like say the Mad Doctor or even in some early shorts: Mortimer Mouse. But what helps Pete is his versatility. He can be the big brute for Mickey and even Donald on occasion, or the lackey for Maleficent in the Kingdom Hearts series, but even excels at being the stern next door neighbor to Goofy and his son in Goofy Troop and the Goofy Movies. Even with his shortcomings in terms of modern day depictions or recognition as Mickeys greatest rival its clear who the biggest, meanest, cruelest, most evil baddie in Mickeys cast is: Pete!
