Topic: Ethics in Strategic Communication and Crisis Management
Abstract: The central purpose of this talk is to provide a discussion reviewing ethics in strategic communication and public relations. Readings review the primary concepts in ethics, the current state of practice, and the normative thoughts of ethicists. A deontological approach will be emphasized and key areas of evolution and debate within the field will be addressed. Implications for practitioners are discussed, including the research showing that a strong understanding of ethics and of how to arrive at ethical decisions can enhance the career prospects of communication professionals. Recommendations will be discussed, including topics such as gaining access to an organization’s top decision makers, promotion to an ethical counselor role, on-the-job ethics training or ethics study, and approaches to ethical analyses. Finally, practical questions for dealing with ethics of the future, technological changes, and challenging world we face will be offered for discussion.
Biography
Shannon A. Bowen, Ph.D., University of South Carolina is Professor (full) in the School of College of Information and Communication (& Faculty Affiliate in Artificial Intelligence), University of South Carolina. Ph.D. (2000) University of Maryland, communication ethics, business management/marketing.
Dr. Bowen specializes in Kantian ethics and decision models for helping organizations face ethical challenges, futurism, crises, and issues management. Bowen teaches and researches ethics across corporations, public affairs, and government. She is the Founder and Executive Director of the Global Strategic Communication Consortium and an annual Conclave for Ethics and Futurism. She is a Principal Investigator of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) ethics grant, The Business of Truth, a prior Trustee of the Arthur W. Page Society, and past editor for the journal Ethical Space: The International Journal of Communication Ethics. She has published more than one hundred journals articles, books, book chapters, a research dictionary, and encyclopedia entries, as well as been Principal Investigator on an NSF Artificial Intelligence Convergence grant. Dr. Bowen has won numerous academic awards, grants, Top Papers, the Heath Award, and the JJ&W Behavioral Science Research Prize. Her most cited works are on ethical decision-making models in corporations (the pharmaceutical industry, state emergency and disaster response), ethical counsel, and Kantian deontological ethics.
