On my recent trip to Petchaburi, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Tham Khao Luang, a stunning cave temple nestled on a small hill just five kilometers from the city center. Petchaburi is a province rich in history, known for its temples, local culture, and lifestyle, and Tham Khao Luang is one of the region’s hidden gems.
Built in honor of King Mongkut (Rama IV) by his son King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), this temple is famous for its fascinating stalactites, stalagmites, and the natural skylight that shines into the cave, creating a magical atmosphere. The cave is home to ancient Buddha images, including a massive six-meter reclining Buddha and many others dating back to the Rattanakosin Period.
The peaceful surroundings, the cool breeze flowing through the cave, and the beautiful interplay of light and stone make this cave temple a truly awe-inspiring place to visit. The temple is easy to reach, and while you can walk uphill, you can also drive up for convenience. Monkeys roam the grounds outside, adding to the sense of adventure!
If you’re visiting Petchaburi or the nearby Khao Wang, Tham Khao Luang is an absolute must-see. Be sure to visit early in the day for the best lighting and a peaceful experience.
