Gretchen Hayward: “So, my name is Gretchen Hayward. I’m the nursing strategy coordinator at the Gwinnett Medical Center. I’ve been in my new position there for about nine months. I was a formal student and did clinical work at Good Sam last year. I think one of the best things about Good Sam is how they pour into their patients. They also pour into their staff, and they pour into the students. When you’re at Good Sam, you never get the feeling that everyone’s being treated like a second-class citizen is what I was saying. You know, like, they’re not important because they’re at a reduced [cost] clinic or a free clinic or whatever. They’re treated with respect and cared about, and I think the people feel that when they’re there. And that’s the relationship you need with your patients in order to get them to come back and to take care of themselves. If people don’t feel cared about, they’re not gonna come back. They’re not going to take care of themselves; they’re not going to get better. And the next we’ll see them is in the ED, and that’s you know, sometimes it’s too late.”
How was your internship experience at Good Sam Gwinnet?
“It was spectacular. The expectations are very high, but they’re helping you through it. They’re teaching you as you go. They, you know, they want you to be the best that you can be, and also to help them and help the patients. And I mean, I had several clinicals, and they were all good and fine, but clinical at Good Sam was really the best experience. And I would have not have passed by boards or gotten my certification if it wasn’t for Good Sam and for the nurse practitioners and the PAs there that were constantly educating and patient.”
What is your advice for the next intern?
“If they can get into Good Sam, or something like that, I don’t know another place like it. But to be prepared to be open, to absorb everything that you can, you know. And there’s a lot of information for FNP students and PA students to learn, but you can’t be with the patients, is the most important, and Good Sam gave me an opportunity to do that and learn and become the best, you know, ‘newbie’ nurse practitioner I could be.”
Did your internship with Good Sam impact your spiritual experience?
“Oh yeah, I mean, I love the fact that in the mornings, you get there early, and they would do the devotion, and talk about that. I mean, I never missed one. I did two days a week pretty much every week. To start your day that way, and to start that with a common mindset about who you’re serving—I mean, you’re not just serving your patient—you're serving God. And that just gives you so much hope and like inspiration to go through the day and do the best that you can, you know. I wish we could do that more.”
Interviewer: “Thank you so much! We appreciate it.”
Gretchen Hayward: “You’re welcome.”
