Explorer Steve Hall and his friend Josh Leard backpack into some of the most remote and hard to reach places within Death Valley's Panamint Mountains. Starting out at Wilson Spring in Johnson Canyon on Day 1, they battle heavily overgrown brush on their way to Hungry Bill's Ranch and then continue up to Panamint Pass by using the historical but obscure Fresh Vegetable Route. On Day 2, they depart from Panamint City and hike up Sourdough Canyon to reach the divide between Surprise Canyon and Hall Canyon, which has outstanding views of Telescope Peak, before dropping over into some nightmarish steep terrain on the other side. On Day 3, they depart from camp near the top of the gorge in Hall Canyon and take the seldom used Hall-Surprise Connector Trail to cross back over to Surprise Canyon on unstable slopes while enjoying amazing views of Panamint Valley. This is an advanced backpacking route which has been uniquely put together by Steve in order to showcase what he considers to be some of the most impressive scenery found in the Panamint Mountains. Backpacking through these areas presents some incredibly difficult challenges that must be overcome, ultimately taking Steve and Josh 33 hours of hiking time over the course of 3 days. Due to the extreme difficulty, this route is not recommended for the general public or regular hikers. Having carried out over 250 lifetime hikes in the park, Steve Hall is the most well-known Death Valley adventure hiker in the world. (Note: No drone flights originated from or landed anywhere within the boundaries of Death Valley NP.)
