Strengthening One Health operations in countries for improved preparedness to emerging zoonotic diseases
Approximately 75% of emerging infectious diseases have an animal origin. Taking a multisectoral, One Health approach is necessary to address not only emerging health threats at the human-animal-environment interface, such as zoonotic influenza, viral hemorrhagic fevers, diseases caused by coronaviruses including MERS and COVID-19, but also endemic and often neglected diseases which continues to have major impacts on health, livelihoods, and economies, and cannot be effectively addressed by one sector alone.
The Tripartite organizations (the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and the Organisation for Animal Health), having recently been joined by the United Nations Environment Programme, have worked together to support countries in developing their capacities in addressing zoonotic diseases in countries, by providing best practices, frameworks and tools improving their preparedness for such threats at the human-animal-environment interface.
This webinar provides understanding of the approach proposed to countries as well as the available tools and how they are used in the 6 regions of WHO. Showcasing examples from national users, it will illustrate concrete and operational implementation of the One Health approach for improved preparedness to zoonotic diseases in countries.
