Back description (from soon2005)
An overflow crowd of students and alumni jammed Brown University's (Pembroke College) Alumnae Hall on Friday evening, October 18, and almost literally raised the roof with shouts and applause for the solid two hours of what was officially dubbed the "First Ivy League Song Fest."
Having previously scouted the proceedings, RCA Victor was there - fortunately - with portable recording apparatus, engineers and producer.
The performers were outstanding singing groups from five Ivy League colleges, not - it should be quickly added - amateurs or dilettantes in any sense of the word, but highly disciplined and dedicated singers...at least the equal of any to be found in the entertainment world.
In this heyday of the hootenanny, many a questionable voice gets away with it on the grounds of authenticity and folk feeling. Transcending fads and fashions, the groups and soloists in this album spring from an historic college tradition and spirit that has been imitated in every corner of the entertainment industry from movies through TV. Individually, the groups have been heard on records, have been booked nationally and internationally, and appear frequently on TV and radio. The Jabberwocks of Brown University are an octet; the four other groups are all about twelve men strong.
October 18, an inspired evening of song...in the head of what amounted almost to a competition, everybody was at the top of his form. CAMPUS HOOTENANNY - in this album, recorded live as it happened.
