São Jorge Castle, situated in the freguesia of Santa Maria Maior in Lisbon, Portugal, is a significant historical fortress. The human presence on the castle hill can be traced back to at least the 8th century BC, with the earliest fortifications constructed around the 1st century BC. Throughout Lisbon's history, the hill of São Jorge Castle has played a crucial role, being occupied by different civilizations including Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors, until it was eventually conquered by the Portuguese during the 1147 Siege of Lisbon. Over the centuries, the castle has served various purposes, such as a royal palace, a military barracks, and the residence of the Torre do Tombo National Archive.
