When Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes hit cinemas in 2001, it made a lot of money but it failed to set the public imagination alight. Certainly in the same way the 1968 original had.
Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes film is vibes central. Burton fought back against a hellish production schedule and made something truly special. Perhaps it would have done better if it had emancipated itself from the Planet of the Apes franchise, if it had gone with the original title of The Chronicles of Aschlar Episode One: The Visitor. Or if it was called Tim Burton’s Space Monkeys. Either way, this film perfectly encapsulates Tim Burton as a risky, chaotic filmmaker and I love it. It is absolute Monkey Mayhem.
