Confused passengers aboard the Horizon Air flight diverted to Portland Sunday night because an off-duty pilot allegedly attempted to shut off the engines are speaking out about their experience aboard the plane.

“You realize how real and helpless you are when you’re in a situation like that, especially in a closed-door environment and you’re not given any information," said passenger Paul Stephen. "You just feel helpless.”

Joseph David Emerson, 44, appeared in court Tuesday and is facing charges of 83 counts of attempted murder. Court documents also say he admitted to taking psychedelic mushrooms before the incident.
