Mikko Heiniö (b. 1948) has been one of the most prominent Finnish composers since the 1980s. The range of his compositional style is so extensive that he has typically been considered a Postmodern composer; however, in any single piece the compositional strategy has always been meticulously defined. His music is strong in character and emotionally charged, and often encompasses various underlying constructions beneath the surface that combine into a harmonious entity. He has composed e.g. three operas, two symphonies, numerous concertos of which especially the nine piano concertos make up a significant set of works, as well as a great deal of chamber and vocal music. Heiniö is also known as one of the most distinguished Finnish musicologists. He was professor of musicology at the University of Turku in 1986-2005.
