The Westfjords is a large peninsula in Northwestern Iceland and is the least populous administrative district. It lies on the Denmark Strait, facing the east coast of Greenland
Fewer than 10 percent of all visitors to Iceland travel to the Westfjords, making it the least visited place.
We spent 3 days driving thru the region to discover the gems within, from amazing landscape like Latrabjarg, Raudasandur beach, Dynjandi waterfall to small towns like Patreksfjordur, Pingeyri, Flateyri, Isofjordur, Heydalur and Holmavik. We had the opportunity to witness Northern Lights right in from of our hotel in Patreksfjodur.
The Westfjords is full of wide-open space and we often feel to have the region all to ourselves with no battling crowds for a view of the mountains or cliffs, no sharing the road with tour buses.
The Gardar BA64, Iceland's oldest steel ship now lying on the Patreksfjordur shoreline offered visitors an opportunity to reflect on the past with a beautiful setting. The Kleifabu and Pennukarlinn stone man along road 62 added life and character to the Westfjords.
