Original airdate: 4/15/2020 | The speed at which the coronavirus pandemic has shifted our lives has been swift. In a matter of weeks, we went from just making sure we cover our faces when we cough and sneeze, to working from home, and being told to shelter in place except for life-sustaining activities like grocery shopping.
While experts are saying the social distancing efforts have been crucial in preventing local hospitals from being overwhelmed, many are wondering -- how long will it be this way? When will we start taking steps toward normalcy? What will it look like?
For some insight into those questions, we reached out to public health experts.
Chrysan Cronin, a professor and Director of Public Health at Muhlenberg College, said deciding a timetable is a balancing act of weighing the impacts on public health, including death, the economy, and people's mental well-being.
"The public health side of me wants to say, 'no,' we're not going to leave our houses until we have this figured out because that's what we would ideally want. But, in reality, we understand there's a whole other piece here, and that's the economic piece," she said. "There's no easy answer here, except the virus is not going to go away by itself, we need to be respectful of that, also realize people need to get back to work."
