We visited Porto for our anniversary and fell in love with the old world charm, city vibe, history and Port wines!
These are 5 of our favorite things to do. If you want to know more, check out our full video!
Port and Douro Wine Tasting Tour in Nova Vila de Gaia -
We had a wonderful time walking, learning, tasting and meeting new friends. It includes tastings of different Port wines and a variety of Douro wines in some of the oldest cellars and family owned wine houses in Porto. More than 300 years of experience and tradition have made Port one of the most famous and appreciated wines in the world.
Livraria Lello - Considered one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, the curvy interior with a skylight illuminating the wooden staircase and bookshelves make this experience unique and breathtaking. Get your entry tickets online and get there early because lines get busy throughout the morning and the many people inside make it difficult to really enjoy the bookstore’s beauty.
View from the Top of Torre do Clerigos -
The 246 foot high Torre dos Clerigos is the highest landmark in Porto and you will have to go up 225 steps to reach the top and enjoy beautiful views of the city. The 6€ ticket also includes entry to the Clérigos museum and entrance to the church is free.
Watch Sunset from Jardim do Morro -
We walked over the iconic Luis I bridge that connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia and were treated with amazing views. The bridge is free to cross and takes around 5 minutes to walk along, although you may spend a lot longer admiring the fantastic view over the Douro River and the city of Porto. Once across in Gaia, prepare for a stunning sunset at Jardim do Morro with locals and tourists alike. Arrive early for a good spot and to grab a snack and wine of course. The beautiful golden hour made this trip unforgettable.
Douro Valley Winery Tour and Cruise -
The Douro Valley is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world with stunning landscapes that are mesmerizing throughout the entire year. We booked a tour package that included transport and pickup from our hotel and visited two wine estates for an introduction to award winning local varietals. We drank delicious wines, ate a traditional Portuguese lunch and learned how the grapes for the Port are crushed by foot in big granite lagars. Then we took a rabelo boat cruise of the Douro River. The views from the boat were simply stunning. Make sure to buy a bottle of wine at one of the wineries and have them open it so you can enjoy it during the river cruise.
