EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager has a "keen interest" in online advertising at Google (GOOG +0.8%, GOOGL +0.6%).
Speaking at a news conference in Brussels, she says she doesn't know if it can become a "full-fledged" competition case, but "we get quite a lot of people who are uncomfortable as to how it works and of course we would want to fully understand it," according to Bloomberg.

Brussels takes a keen interest in GAFA algorithms
The European Commission is putting further pressure on GAFA ... And is interested in their algorithms. The digital giants have thus summoned by Brussels to explain the operation of their respective algorithms within the framework of the new European rules, but also to open their archives to regulators and researchers, declared Friday the European head of digital and the fight antitrust.
This move is expected to impact US internet giants, such as Google, Amazon, Apple and Facebook, which have treasure troves of data and lucrative online branches . These notably base their impact on the market on their algorithms, which help them target the ads to the users that the advertisers want to reach.
For Margrethe Vestager, European Commissioner for Competition, he s above all, it is about shedding light on how these algorithms work and ensuring that companies are responsible for their decisions. "Larger platforms should provide more information on how their algorithms work, when regulators ask for it," she said at an event hosted by research agency AlgorithmWatch and the European Policy Center.
A lucrative market for GAFAs
"They should also give regulators and researchers the access to the data they hold, including archives ", also said the European Commissioner. This will announce on December 2 two sets of draft rules known as the "Digital Services Act " and the "Digital Markets Act ", underlining the EU 's determination to contain thetech giants and force them to play more fairly. This new legislation will have to be submitted to the opinions of EU countries and the European Parliament before entering into force, a process which could take a year or more.
As a reminder, Online market revenue was $ 124.6 billion in 2019, about $ 54 billion more than TV , which ranks second. Note that around 70% of digital ads were served and viewed on mobile devices. On the desktop side, performance is rather stable with $ 37.9 billion in 2019 against $ 37.6 billion in 2018.
In this little game, paid search, which strongly interests Brussels, comes in lead by accounting for 43.9% of total revenue, or $ 54.7 billion and an increase of about 13% in one year. Display and space purchase equates to approximately 31%, or 38.1 milliards of dollars. Video ads are roughly 17% of revenue, or $ 21.7 billion, an increase of 33.5% from 2018.
