Etapp Kyle returns to Ostgut Ton with Nolove, a deeply personal project comprising an EP, short film and forthcoming web exhibition. The subject is Western Ukraine, and in particular the cities of Kamianets-Podilskyi and Chernivtsi, the region of Kyle's birth, development and inspiration.
Although now part of Ukraine, the region, which is also known as Bukovina, has in the past been part of Moldova, the Habsburg Empire, the Russian Empire, Romania and the Soviet Union. Its turbulent history and position on the border with Romania and Moldova gives the area a unique blend of cultures and people, something we feel firsthand in Nolove's accompanying short film, which is soundtracked by "Nolove." This is, in Kyle's words, "The local vibe." It's a part of the world that can often be characterised by hardship—a place of "no love"—but also one of human spirit and immense beauty.
The EP gives shape to the musical developments Kyle has made in the studio and DJ booth since the release of 2017's Alpha, his last EP for Ostgut Ton. Nolove's four tracks, each named for themes from the film, are detailed and richly poignant, moods inspired by personal reflections on Chernivtsi, but very much forward-facing in their beats and rhythms. It's an EP that shows what's possible when an artist synthesizers his or her past influences and experiences to create something fresh and vital.
The EP's artwork, film and web exhibition stem from a creative partnership between Kyle, who directed the film, and his friend Yanosh Buzhnitsa, its director of photography. In the film's first 10 seconds we see the faces of the roughly 60 locals the pair interviewed during the shoot, dialogue that will be featured, along with intimate shots from the photographer Sergei Veredin, in the upcoming web exhibition. (Hit pause near the start of the film to catch a flavour of the characters involved.) Kyle had aimed to realise a film project for many years, but it was Buzhnitsa's impressive progress as a cinematographer that finally provided the spark he needed to get a project as ambitious as Nolove off the ground.
The contradiction here might be that Nolove is a project also filled with love.
