Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were met with angry protestors while visiting a region devastated by recent flash floods. The crowd threw mud and various objects at the royals near Valencia on Nov. 3, days after a reported 200 people were killed when more than a year’s worth of rain fell in the area within just eight hours. Chants of “murderer” and “shame” also followed the King as he was guided through the chaos. He and the Queen were seen splattered with dirt, as Her Majesty also appeared emotional while meeting with residents. Felipe previously shared in a translated post on X that he was “devastated” over the loss of life and The Guardian reports that he noted in a video hours after his visit that he understands the anger and frustration the locals feel. While one bystander reportedly told the King that he was “four days too late” amid ongoing criticism of the government’s flood response, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and other elected officials have fielded much of the outrage. Sánchez himself was reportedly evacuated from the Valencia outing. Per The Guardian, residents received an emergency alert advising them not to leave their homes though the floods were already underway.
