today i'll be discussing commonly
mistaken
or confusing pairs of words in english
where you would learn words their
spellings
right pronunciations.
the first set of words are cereal
vs cereal.they're both pronounced
the same
but they are spelled differently this
cereal means
a kind of food which you eat made out of
rye
weight maize or corn like corn flakes
or oats while this cereal has
three meanings first meaning is a
periodical
or a journal found in a library
like a serial number second meaning
is that of a predictable human behavior
or a pattern of behavior
like that of a serial killer and the
third meaning
is something which is related to the
series you watch
next set of
words are commonly
interchanged
even by natives and they are advice
versus advice these both
are spelt differently and pronounced
differently too
this is a noun pronounced with s sound and this
is a verb and this is pronounced with a
z sound advise advice
and advice the meanings of both these
words
are same though they mean recommendation
suggestion or a guidance but there are
a few differences you use this advice
for example without his advice
i would have failed so he got his advice
you're talking about a person who has
given you
his advice and this one is used when you
talk about
offering a guidance a suggestion or a
recommendation
for example he advised me to be
cautious or i had advised you
to be careful so you're talking about a
person who has
offered you his advice or you can also
use
when you talk about offering advice and this advice is also used when you
want to
ask for an advice for example kindly or please
advise me
on how to do this
now let's move on to the next set of
words complement
versus complement they both are
pronounced the same
but spelt differently this complement
is with an i and this complement is with
an
e this actually means when you praise
someone
or when you admire someone he
complimented me
on my beautiful dress or he complimented
me on my
success it's simple and this means when
you talk about something being perfect
complete or whole for example ketchup
and potato chips are complementary
to each other or they are a perfect
couple
they complement each other which simply
means they complete each other
so one is praise another is making
something complete
better or perfect now let's move on to
the next set of words
desert versus dessert
they both are pronounced differently and
spelt differently as well
this simply means a dry area a land or a
region
for example sahara is a big desert or a
large desert
and this means when you talk about a
sweet dish like
an ice cream or a chocolate or even
custard cakes and there's another meaning to the word
desert which is a verb
form which
means to
abandon or to leave someone for example
he deserted
his cat in a desert so you're leaving
someone or
something now let's move on to the next
set of words
they are cue versus q
these both are spelled differently but
pronounced the same
this means an indication or a signal
for example he missed the queue to be on
the stage
so he arrived late so it's a queue or a
signal or an indication
this means a line of people
or vehicles standing.
now let's move on to the last set of
words which are commonly interchanged
and misinterpreted by many
and they are you're and your. You're is a contraction
of
you are.Your means a possessive
version
of the pronoun you but this is always
make it a point to note always followed
by
noun or a gerund gerund means ing form
for example your book your cat
you're swimming so whenever you want to
talk about
a possessive version of the pronoun you
you are saying something about you
when it's always followed by a noun/a
gerund.
