Maybach S Class vs Rolls Royce Phantom who is more luxurious
The luxurious Maybach label was restored in early 2004, with sales forecasts of 1000 vehicles per year. It never occurred. Global sales were less than 200 units last year. Here in Australia, Maybach sold - wait for it - zero cars last year and is on course to do so again this year.
In fact, just 13 Maybachs have been sold in Australia since the vehicle's introduction seven years ago. The issue is, of course, Rolls-Royce, which has sold 109 million-dollar-plus automobiles in the same time frame.
In 2007, another year with no Maybach sales in Australia, just 401 Maybach vehicles were sold internationally, compared to 1010 Rolls-Royce Phantoms. The same year saw just 156 Maybach sales in the United States (I'm presuming largely in Miami and Beverly Hills) and a subsequent purge of US Maybach dealers, with one out of every three eliminated, from 72 to 48 in total. We'll never know who felt the most deceived by the cull: the 24 punted or the remaining 48.
Former Mercedes-Benz Australia CEO Ernst Lieb, who later became CEO of M-B North America, has said that worldwide identification of the Maybach brand is poor when compared to both the S-Class Benz (with which the Maybach shares its platform) and Rolls-Royce. "[Rolls-Royce] is positioned between an S-Class and a Maybach," Lieb is quoted as saying. When you drive the Maybach, you notice a difference. It is not comparable." Meanwhile, returning to Earth.
Mr Lieb's viewpoint would almost certainly be rejected by Rolls-Royce owners, but he is, of course, true - to a point. The Roller is unrivalled, and the Drophead Coupe in particular is impossibly gorgeous and has an unrivalled road presence. Then there are the suicide doors, which I adore. (Rolls-Royce, on the other hand, would never use such a term.) They are known as 'coach' doors in Rolls-Royce parlance.) The Maybach, on the other hand, demonstrates that even a bottomless pit of money does not guarantee excellent taste. It's gaudy, overdone, and looks like an S-Class with a terrible Ssangyong aesthetic makeover (particularly from the front). In marketing jargon, you'd probably say it's too similar to the S-Class that inspired it. As Mr Lieb claims, the two are in no way comparable.
In order to enhance its on-the-nose sales, Daimler updated the Maybach with new wheels, paint, and grille, among other changes, in 2010. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... and all that... However, many saw the outward outcome as an even cheesier 'South Korean' S-Class. Its construction quality remained unrivalled, but some of the new Maybach bling blew previous conceptions of 'excess' right out of the water.
