"I am from Moscow. At first, I came to Saratov - I literally bought the last ticket - there are many taxis from there. They take exorbitant rates, somebody was even demanding 20,000 rubles (350 US dollars) just to reach the traffic jam at the border. And from there, one must make it by foot to the border checkpoint, about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). I stood there for about five hours before I caught a ride. You must find a taxi or just a car to cross the border because it is forbidden to cross on foot."

8. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Kirill, (last name not given), relocated Muscovite:
"It is very difficult to find an apartment, even a room. There are no hotels, hostels, nothing of the sort. The volunteers were offering some sort of temporary accommodation. I also heard that you can sleep overnight in a mosque or a church. Online I read that they were letting Russians sleep in saunas, movie theatres. I was lucky to find one room for a wild price and I still don't know whether they will double the price now or something like that."

The people standing here are afraid that sooner or later, a full mobilization will be announced and then no one will be able to cross the borders."

STORYLINE:
About 98,000 Russians have crossed into Kazakhstan in the week since President Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilization of reservists to fight in Ukraine, Kazakh officials said Tuesday, as men seeking to avoid the call-up continued to flee by land and air into neighboring countries.
Kazakhstan and Georgia, both part of the former Soviet Union, appeared to be the most popular destinations for those crossing by car, bicycle or on foot.
Those with visas for Finland or Norway also have been coming in by land. Plane tickets abroad had sold out quickly despite steep prices.
Russia's Defense Ministry has said that only about 300,000 people with prior combat or other military service would be called up, but reports have emerged from various Russian regions that recruiters were rounding up men outside that description. That fueled fears of a much broader call-up, sending droves of men of all ages and backgrounds to airports and border crossings.
