Footage of ex-LMS Black Fives, 44871 and 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier, tearing through Lancaster with the last leg of the Citadel railtour, 9 November 2019. 45407 has been based again in Scotland this year, working the Jacobite steam train workings between Fort WIlliam and Mallaig, before heading south after the end of the season (with 45212 on 27th October).
The CItadel was a one-day tour organised by Riley & Son Railtours, starting at Manchester Victoria and heading to Carlisle via Blackburn and the renowned Settle and Carlisle Railway. The tour then returned south via Penrith, over Shap and a stop at Carnforth for water before the final leg took them onto Manchester Victoria. The loco's then worked light engine to the East Lancashire Railway.
Both engines were part of the original batch of Stanier loco's, with 45407 being outshopped from Armstrong Whitworth, Newcastle in 1937, and 44871 being built at Crewe in 1945. Both are now owned by Ian Riley, and 45407 has worked regularly on the mainline in preservation. 44871 was one of the loco's which hauled the famous Fifteen Guinea Special of 11 August 1968.
Lancaster Railway Station was opened in 1846, as the southern terminus of the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway. It was then operated by the London and North Western Railway, The London, Midland and Scottish Railway, and is now part of the electrified London-Glasgow West Coast Main Line.
