At least nine people were killed after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines' main Luzon island on Monday afternoon, according to local media.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) revised the magnitude of the earthquake to 6.1-magnitude from the earlier reported 5.7-magnitude.
Phivocls said the quake, which struck at 17:11 local time, hit at a depth of 12 kilometers, about two kilometers northeast of Castillejos town in northern Zambales province.
The earthquake severely damaged Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Manila, the country's capital. A Department of Transportation and Communications spokesman said that the airport's administration department suggested shutting down the airport for 24 hours for inspection and repairs.
