#Lithuania is known for its beautiful landscapes, and there is a lot to see in this country, from the #capital city of #vilnius to wide open spaces like the #Curonian_Spit. In Lithuania, beaches are spangled with amber, and woodlands are alive with demonic statues. Medieval-style mead, and traditional wood-carving never went out of style.
Vilnius Old Town.
The Old Town of Vilnius, one of the largest, and best-preserved historic centres in Northern Europe, and the Baltics, is a delight to visit. Evolving over centuries, this UNESCO-listed town features labyrinthine streets busy with restaurants, bars, and shops, and offers visitors a charming gateway to the Higher Castle.
Ninth Fort.
The #Ninth_Fort, which was once a part of the 19th-century Kaunas Fortress, played a more dark part in Lithuanian history during the Nazi occupation of that nation in World War II when it served as a camp for the genocide of Jews. More than 30,000 people were killed there, and today the site has been preserved as a museum, and memorial.
#Trakai Island Castle.
The castle is well-known for its Gothic-style construction, and unique setting on an island in one of Lithuania's deepest lakes, Lake Galve. The perspective of the antique building looks like something from a fairy tale. The lake freezes over in the winter, creating a free-standing skating rink.
#Rumsiskes Open-Air Museum.
The 195-hectare open-air ethnographic museum displays, and recreates the daily activities, and customs of people in Lithuania. It resembles a small representation of Lithuania from the 18th to the 20th centuries, along with mills, workshops, and agricultural equipment that are hundreds of years old.
#Palanga_Beach.
Palanga Beach is widely regarded as the most beautiful in the country. The beach is about 10 kilometres long. Along the beach, there are numerous snack shacks and bars where you can enjoy a meal and a drink. There is also a pier on the beach where you can sit and relax while admiring the views of the sea.
# St_Annes_Chruch.
Unquestionably one of the most spectacular, and stunning structures, St Anne's Church is located on the banks of the Vilnia River. The church was constructed in a Flamboyant Gothic style in the year 1500. Its exquisite red brick exterior, flanked by two towers with a charming spire in the middle, is a sight to behold.
#Pazaislis_Monastery.
One of Lithuania's most treasured cultural landmarks, the Pazaislis Monastery is a well-liked tourist site for both religious, and secular travellers. The monastery is the biggest in Lithuania, and is regarded as one of Northern Europe's greatest examples of Italian baroque architecture.
#Curonian_Spit.
The Curonian Spit is a curved, and thin 98-kilometre-long dune that separates the Baltic Sea from the Curonian Lagoon. The Kursiu Nerija National Park was created in 1991 to protect the unique beauty of these ever-changing dunes. The park provides an important habitat for migratory birds, and rare plants, as well as many opportunities for hiking, cycling, and kayaking trips.
#Gate_of_Dawn.
As the only remaining defensive wall in Vilnius, the 16th-century Gate of Dawn is a top historic attraction. The fortification, and its church are perhaps best known as home to a revered religious icon, the Vilnius Madonna which some believe is imbued with healing powers making the sight a well-known destination for pilgrims.
Museum of Occupations, and Freedom Fights.
The Museum of Occupations, and Freedom Fights which is housed in the old KGB, and Gestapo headquarters is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. The museum provides a comprehensive examination of significant moments in Lithuanian modern history with exhibits on history as well as jail cells, and a chamber used for executions.
Hill of Crosses.
Over 100,000 crosses, a powerful symbol of Lithuanian national faith, and identity, are positioned on a small hill in northern Lithuania. The site's exact history is unknown, but over the years, religious visitors have left behind not only crosses but also rosaries, figurines of the Virgin Mary, and miniature carvings.
Vilnius Cathedral.
The Vilnius Cathedral is a significant site to the Lithuanian people, and the centre of the nation's Catholic spiritual life. It has a long, and colourful history that dates back to the 13th century.
