In search of the Preseli Bluestones of Stonehenge.
A walk back in time over the remote Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire, West Wales.

This rugged area now seems sparse, but you can see the signs of human activity dating back thousands of years if you look carefully.

They are also known as the Preseli Mountains although the highest peak is only 536 metres.

One of its most famous claims is that it’s the source of many of the bluestones found at Stonehenge, 180 miles away.

I started the walk at the foot of the Iron Age Hillfort in the Preseli Hills near the village of Crymych (SN 165 332). It is only a small lay by which is big enough for about 4 cars.

Foel Drygarn can be seen for miles around, it dates from the iron age but within the inner defences are three Bronze Age burial mounds.

At the base of the hillfort is the Golden Road which crosses the Preseli Hills it is an ancient route that was established in the prehistoric period.

Walking along west along this route you can see many rocky outcrops including Carn Menyn but one of these, Carn Goedog has recently been identified as the main source for the spotted dolerite bluestones used at Stonehenge. These Stonehenge bluestones were quarried about 5000 years ago.
