The summit if Etna as seen from 2000 meters altitude. Its possible to drive to Etna up 2000 m and stay overnight at this level. There are 2 hotels there. One of them is Hotel Corsaro, where we stayed. The other is Rifugio Sapienza. At this level you can feel earthquakes all the time, so it is quite a thrilling experience to sleep there. The access above 2500 m is prohibited. Only with a guide in a guided tour. The village that is closest to the summit of Etna is Nicolosi and had been destroyed by the eruptions quite a few times.

Both these hotels that are situated on Etna (at 2000 m) are reasonably priced by Sicilian standards 85 and 99 euro per night, respectively. The cheapest double rooms throughout Sicily would cost you ca 60-70 eur a night. It is rarely you can stumble at something below 50. Italy is more expensive than Portugal or Madeira where we went last time.
