This video explores the complexities surrounding Zimbabwe's upcoming elections on 23 August 2023. Throughout history, elections in the country have sparked controversy and resulted in outcomes that are often considered illegitimate and not representative of the people's will. Chris Maroleng, CEO of Good Governance Africa, emphasises that the election in and of itself is not the solution to Zimbabwe’s multiple challenges. Maroleng argues that critical reforms should take place before elections should even be considered in the country. Several issues, such as military involvement in governance and rule by law with restrictive legislation pose significant obstacles to the country's progress toward true democracy. Opposition parties also face their own limitations, further casting doubt on the likelihood of a beneficial outcome for the country. Adding to these concerns, the absence of a verified voter roll raises further questions about the fairness of the forthcoming elections. Election monitors, particularly those representing the regional body SADC, are urged to fearlessly and impartially highlight any irregularities during the electoral process.
