Here's a quick technique demonstration for HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). The mechanics apply to longswords as well as rapiers and just about any other sword, really.
Constraining the opponent's blade ("winning" the bind) prevents them from threatening you with the point while landing your thrust. When done correctly it will also block a downward cut in response.
